Hela Sarana - Covid-19 Appeal for Sri Lanka

The charity that Irie Perera volunteers for, Hela Sarana, is appealing for money to go towards emergency medical relief.

I am quoting from a post on the Hela Sarana Facebook page because I think they have put it in the most simplest and comprehensive form:-

Your help is needed.  Right now Sri Lanka is experiencing 5 to 10 fold increase in the infection rate from the first wave paving the way to a spiralling adverse impact on hospital services provided to covid-19 patients.

Immediate initiative has been made by committing:
- £15,000 to 3 main hospitals
- £2,500 to supply "Pulse Oximeters" to a number of hospitals
- £5,500 to purchase Video Laryngoscope for Lady Ridgeway Hospital

Every pound you donate, will go a long way to purchase vital medical supplies to help ever increasing number of covid victims.  Please support our latest initiative to mobilise more funds to ongoing commitment and efforts.

Donation can be made via Bank Transfer:

A little bit about Hela Sarana
Hela Sarana was formed in 1996 and is one of the longest running registered Sri Lankan charities in the United Kingdom (Charity Reg No.1093504).  It was formed by a group of Sri Lankan's living in the UK to support charitable projects in Sri Lanka and it achieved UK government approved charity status in 2002.

As Irie mentioned in her podcast as well as emergency relief Hela Sarana also raises money for the catastrophic problem of chronic kidney disease also known as CKD that affects over 20,000 people especially from the North Central province.
It also raised money for an education grant scheme, since 2004 553 students have benefitted.  Irie is one of the scholarship program coordinators.

You can find out more of what they do by looking at their Facebook page

A Nod to Family Scribbles

I couldn't resist buying this illustration from Mike at Family Scribbles  for one of my husband's Christmas presents.  It is quirky and shows all the notable elements of Billericay High Street.  Mike had the business acumen to advertise his illustration on The Billericay Discussion Page on Facebook, where I saw it.  It is finally on our bedroom wall and looks brilliant! You might be thinking, where have I heard of Family Scribbles before?  Mike was very kind to give an illustration of a very wonderful person who has become known as Colin the Clapper.  He handed Colin the illustration as a thank you, Mike had been jogging past Colin most mornings as he stood on the roundabout near Basildon Hospital clapping all the NHS staff as they went to work.  You can read a bit more about this here . Colin Wilkinson started paying tribute to the NHS staff on the 25th April 2020.  When he had done it for forty days he made the national newspapers when he was ...

Ken Porter's New Book

Sylvia Kent has written an article about a gentleman who has been very helpful to me when I was researching both of my books, Ken Porter.  In particular Basildon Through Time .  I virtually became researcher in residence on a Monday and Wednesday at the Green Centre at Wat Tyler Country Park in 2014.  He is by far the leading expert on Laindon and Langdon Hills history at present.  You can see Sylvia's article here .  You could also visit Basildon Heritage's website , Ken is the chairman and treasurer of the group.
