Radion Project - Lenticular Screen and Audio History Tour

If you have ventured down the left-hand side of the Empire Cinema in East Square, Basildon you may have seen the lenticular screen.  If you viewed the screen from one side you would have seen a nature panorama and from the other side you may have noticed images of buildings, monuments and public art relating to Basildon's heritage.

On the website it eloquently explains:-

"Radion is a collaborative project that explores Basildon's past and present with a focus on nature and heritage within the borough.  Basildon Borough History, Basildon Borough Heritage, its volunteers and local people have been suggesting pieces of built heritage to be celebrated and remembered within the Borough.  These images have been used to create a panorama depicting an alternative skyline of Basildon from a chronological perspective.

Students from ten local primary schools including Ryedene, Lee Chapel, Millhouse, Fairhouse, Pioneer Janet Duke, Noak Bridge, Great Berry, Northlands and Ghyllgrove School have all been exploring the importance of local nature through leaf rubbings and identification.  The nature panorama depicts key green spaces around the borough with each leaf inserted (over 2,000) having been made by a different child.

Accompanying the screen is a series of QR codes which intend to animate the screen, from an audio history tour spoken by local people, a nature map showing where each schools leaves can be found and more.

The Radion Project is funded by Basildon Council and the Arts Council.

You can explore more of this exciting project, which is just awaiting the QR codes, here: - https://radionproject.com/

I believe that when it is completed it will be a fantastic piece of public art in itself.

A Nod to Family Scribbles

I couldn't resist buying this illustration from Mike at Family Scribbles  for one of my husband's Christmas presents.  It is quirky and shows all the notable elements of Billericay High Street.  Mike had the business acumen to advertise his illustration on The Billericay Discussion Page on Facebook, where I saw it.  It is finally on our bedroom wall and looks brilliant! You might be thinking, where have I heard of Family Scribbles before?  Mike was very kind to give an illustration of a very wonderful person who has become known as Colin the Clapper.  He handed Colin the illustration as a thank you, Mike had been jogging past Colin most mornings as he stood on the roundabout near Basildon Hospital clapping all the NHS staff as they went to work.  You can read a bit more about this here . Colin Wilkinson started paying tribute to the NHS staff on the 25th April 2020.  When he had done it for forty days he made the national newspapers when he was ...

Ken Porter's New Book

Sylvia Kent has written an article about a gentleman who has been very helpful to me when I was researching both of my books, Ken Porter.  In particular Basildon Through Time .  I virtually became researcher in residence on a Monday and Wednesday at the Green Centre at Wat Tyler Country Park in 2014.  He is by far the leading expert on Laindon and Langdon Hills history at present.  You can see Sylvia's article here .  You could also visit Basildon Heritage's website , Ken is the chairman and treasurer of the group.
